We have Junior and Adult sailing programs,
taught by qualified CYA
instructors, to help you master the basics or polish up your skills. Our
harbour, naturally sheltered and blessed with gentle breezes, is perfect for
windsurfing and sailing - there are club sailboat races every Monday and
Wednesday evening throughout the summer.
Also during the summer months, over 500 power and sail boats visit our beautiful
marina. Visitors are from all parts of the world. Sailors on
Northumberland Strait can't afford to miss this great stop-over with the best
facilities in Eastern Canada.
Our sheltered marina is equipped with many slips. Dock personnel will
greet your arrival at quayside with a friendly welcome...and a helping hand with
mooring and fuel.
Our club's facilities include power, water, pump-out, telephones, computer capabilities
(Hi- Speed plug-in and Hi-Speed Wireless), showers, laundry, change rooms, a restaurant, games room
and a licensed lounge with live entertainment each weekend. We have
barbecues on the patio for the do-it-yourself chefs with fresh seafood
available at a nearby market. We can provide you with marine charts and we
can arrange car rental for touring around the island. We are also within walking
distance of a marine supply store.
A Little History About Us:
In 1964, the Summerside Yacht Club 1965 Inc was the FIRST to give us all the facilities, breakwater, finger piers etc... It
was all put together by a few dedicated boaters, wishing to pursue their
hobby and at the same time clean up the town waterfront, previously the
words "environment and friendly" had never been used together.
The group were described by the local wags at that time as a bunch of
youngsters "full of piss and vinegar".
Their first clubhouse was the vacated dental office from CFB Summerside, purchased and moved for the grand sum of $2,000 to
a newly reclaimed landfill between the Hymie's Gulf and the Marine wharf.
The location became nicknamed "Rozmann Cove" (the name of the DOT
engineer who in many ways encouraged the small group, and who
"found" the funds to build a breakwater (to protect the Marine Wharf from
being undermined). This site is now the location of
Spinnakers Landing,
in the center of downtown Summerside.
In 1974, to make way for the new Waterfront Drive, which
was to be constructed through the "Old Marina", SYC
moved to the a new larger modern 5000 sq ft clubhouse and "New
Marina" on the adjacent "Summerside Waterfront Development"
property. Eight (8) acres were reclaimed from the harbour, thanks to P.E.I.
Comprehensive Development Plan monies, and a renewed interest in our
waterfront, spurred on by "friends" of the yacht club.
In 1982 SYC and the Summerside Curling Club
joined together and added a single span 6 sheet curling rink. The complex is known
as The
Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club.
The photo on the left shows the SYC Marina as it appeared in 1986. The "Old
Marina Basin" (Rossman Cove) is barely visible at the top centre of
the picture. The EPTEK CENTRE is at the top right and the SILVER FOX
CURLING AND YACHT CLUB at the bottom right of photo.
The lower photo shows the Marina in 1995 as one of the Tall
Ships is leaving. Spinnaker's Landing, a popular summer time
attraction, is visible in the upper left corner and in 1996 a new Theatre of the
Arts, the Wyatt Centre, was opened and encompasses the two brown buildings just over the
light house at the left of the marina basin.

In 1993 SYC doubled their berthing capacity to over 120
boats! Further marina expansion was carried out the winter of 1999.
SYC offers a full facility marina, with showers,
laundry, lounge, meals (weekdays at noon, Friday evening also), fuel and pump
out
facilities. The finger piers have 30 and 60 amp service and cable TV hookup. A
shopping mall is situated on the same parking lot as the club (less than a
one minute walk) containing liquor, department and many other
stores. A marine supply store, GREENSHORE
MARINE, is located a ten minute walk away.
This picture was taken during the sailing season of 2000.
SYC offers the best facilities and hospitality for
sailors in Atlantic Canada.
Summerside Yacht Club monitors VHF CH 16 and 68
and also has a Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary vessel, TeAMO on duty 24 hrs/day.
On your approach, a call on VHF will have a "dock person" direct
you to a suitable berth and help you tie-up.
